LEAWOOD, Kan. - How difficult is it to find a safe day care in Kansas and Missouri?
Many parents do not know where to turn for hard facts, so they often rely on the recommendations of trusted friends or intuition.
Last week, a mother who picked up her son injured from a Blue Springs day care said she was stunned because she had known the provider her whole life. She said it is why she did no background checks.
The Blue Springs day care provider is now under investigation.
Many parents admit they do not know where to turn to find that information and states have not made that information easily assessable until recently.
Parents would do more homework if they knew that hundreds of day cares in Missouri are unregulated and that both Kansas and Missouri received a "D" rating this year for its regulations and supervision.
In the last two years, both states have created parental portals on state websites where parents can get quick access to a provider's background check, compliance records, surveys and complaints.
