Being able to protect yourself in an active shooter situation begins with having a plan in place.

Steve Woolridge is the Chief Krav Maga instructor in Kansas City. He helps train police and neighbors how to respond to an active shooter situation.

"The number one thing we stress to people is to always be aware of your surroundings," Woolridge said.

Woolridge told 41 Action News if you ever find yourself in an active shooter situation, there are things you can do to try and stay safe including:

  • Have 9-1-1 on speed dial in your cellphone
  • Always keep your eyes on the intruder
  • Don't stop moving
  • Every second counts
  • Be aware of your exits
