Increase in number of traffic tickets issued by KCPD

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The number of traffic tickets officers wrote in April more than doubled from a year ago.

In April 2013, officers wrote 2,800 speeding tickets. This past April, the number jumped to more than 6,000.

The number of tickets written for ignoring stop signs doubled from 900 last year to 1,850 this year.

We spoke with a man who learned the rules of the road apply to bicycles too.

"I was on a bicycle. Who stops for a stop sign on a bicycle that's on a main street?" he said.

Police said they added the extra patrols as a safety precaution. They add they do not have a quota for the number of tickets officers have to give out.
