Injured sea turtle Gertrude makes public debut at SEA LIFE Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - One of Kansas City's newest residents will be making her public debut Friday morning.

Gertrude, a 5-year-old sea turtle, will be released into the Ocean Tank at Sea LIFE Kansas City at 9 a.m.

Gertrude arrived earlier this week from Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, where she spent the last year and a half recovering from wounds caused by a fishing line that caused one of her flippers to be amputated.

According to aquarium curator Aaron Sprowl, acquiring Gertrude has been a long process.

"We started that process when we opened in April of last year," Sprowl said. "We finally got our permit at the end of the year and basically we went and picked her up from Tampa last week".

Gertrude weighs about 45 pounds now and will not attain her full weight of 400 pounds for another 15 years.

Gertrude will be in a tank alongside several sharks, stingrays, large and small fish.
