Job fair created to make veterans marketable for corporations

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A three day job fair for veterans is set to begin Tuesday afternoon.

The companies participating are looking for vets for corporate and IT positions.

Besides the face-to-face meetings, there will also be workshops on resume writing, creating a LinkedIn profile and interviewing skills.

Marine Capt. Nick Swaggert said vets are trained to never use the word "I" in the military, so that's a hard habit to break for many.

"If someone is interviewing and I'm constantly deflecting the conversation back to the team, they just might assume that I didn't perform well at all when I'm deferring back to the team, when in reality that's part of our training," Swaggert said.

Swaggert advises veterans to wear a sui,t but not their military uniform. He said this will give companies a better idea of how you would fit in the corporate world.

The job fair runs from 2-7 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday at the Genesis10 Delivery Center, 8330 Ward Parkway.
