KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Shawnee branch of the Johnson County Library reopened Tuesday after being closed for more than a week to treat bed bugs.

The library opened at 9 a.m. Tuesday “after a thorough treatment and cleaning” for the insects, a Johnson County Library spokesman said.

The branch, located at 13811 Johnson Dr., closed on Sept. 28 after the bed bugs were found.

In a letter to library patrons, officials said that “numerous steps” were taken to ensure the library was free of bed bugs before reopening.

Library staff worked with an external vendor to fumigate the building; sealed and baked infested materials; and did a deep clean of the branch. Staff also received “refresher training” on bed bugs, the library said in the letter.

The library will undergo quarterly inspections with control specialists in the future.
