KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A boy is dead and another child is fighting for their life Saturday night after they were hit by a minivan while skateboarding Saturday afternoon in the Northland.
Police said it happened around 5:30 p.m. near NE Winn Road and N. Bellefontaine Ave., in Kansas City, Mo., when the two were sitting skateboards.
They were coming out of a parking lot at the Walnut Grove apartment complex about to cross Winn road when the tragedy occurred.
“The woman stopped, but not in the time and unfortunately she struck both of the children,” Sergeant Bill Mahoney with the Kansas City Police Department, said.
Police said one boy died from his injuries at the scene of the accident, the other child, a 6-year-old boy, was taken to Children's Mercy with a head injury in serious condition then transported to another hospital for surgery Saturday night.
Family members of the boy who died told 41 Action News he was eight-year old Jordan Hale.
Sgt. Mahoney said the driver of the Dodge minivan—who is cooperating with investigators—wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but are looking into whether she was speeding.
“You do have a lot of traffic in this area it's pretty heavily populated there are a lot of children,” he said.
People who live at the Walnut Grove apartment complex said the property doesn't allow skateboarding on it grounds and areas for kids play are limited.
The complex's property manager didn't want to comment on the accident Saturday evening.
Those who knew the victim don't when the grieving will end.
"He'll be missed," Stan Cosgrove, a family friend said.
Hale’s family members said they are working on funeral arrangements and on a fund to help with funeral expenses.
There’s no word whether the driver of the minivan will face charges in connection with the accident.
