Fire at vacant Kansas City apartment building spreads to neighboring church

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City church was damaged early Wednesday when a wall of a burning vacant apartment building collapsed.

Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief James Garrett said his crews were called around 4 a.m. to the building near Seventh and Prospect.

Firefighters arrived to find the building fully engulfed in flames. The wall adjacent to a neighboring church collapsed shortly afterward, exposing the church to fire.

Crews were able to quickly control the flames on the church, but as of 5:35 a.m., were still working to extinguish the blaze at the apartment building, Garrett said.

There were no known injuries, Garrett said, but his crews had yet to be able to get inside the apartment building to confirm whether or not anyone was inside.
