A Kansas City firefighter is recovering after he suffered a heat stroke during training on June 10.

In a press release sent on Saturday, the Kansas City Fire Department said the firefighter was admitted to an intensive care unit and was in a medically induced coma until early this morning.

"The firefighter has made substantial progress and communicating fully with family," the release stated.

Officials said the training exercise lasted about two hours.

"It was routine, hands-on operation utilizing a vacant home that did not involve fire," the release said. "Despite monitoring heat conditions and taking regular breaks for hydration, the firefighter collapsed shortly after noon."

This event has caused the Kansas City Fire Department to reevaluate temperature restrictions for outdoor training activities.

"We are actively investigating all aspects of this situation in order to ensure safety of personnel," officials said. "Our intent, as it is every day, is to assure that we are meeting pertinent standards for both safety and effectiveness in every aspect of our service."
