Brass Boxing will be hosting a self-defense class for both men and women on June 24 at 4 p.m.
The decision to host the seminar comes after the recent shooting in Washington D.C. and the homicides on local Kansas City trails.
Austen Ford is the owner of the gym located at 79th and Wornall.
He said because of all the recent news, he and his wife have decided to bring in an instructor who can teach not just self-defense but also how to disarm a gunman.
The recent homicides on local trails also influenced their decision to host more classes.
"And that's where she jogs in the evenings,” said Ford in reference to his wife. “And those were men that were being assaulted. We just need to be vigilant as a society."
