KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Excitement is building for Saturday's Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon with Ivy Funds, and Thursday event coordinators will be kicking off the weekend with a health and fitness expo at Crown Center.
The expo is presented by the Mayo Clinic and will bring together more than 100 vendors from across the country.
Crowds of runners and fans are expected to pass through in the coming days, as the race maintains pace to exceed the record for highest number of runners.
Sarah Dee, and event director for the Kansas City Sports Commission, says she expects more than 12,000 runners and more than 26,000 spectators.
She said with that kind of numbers, safety becomes a primary focus.
"We work very closely with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department and the city," Dee said. "We have our action plans in place, and we do the best we can to keep everybody safe."
Organizers will have about 1,800 volunteers and about 135 off-duty officers monitoring the track.
The 26.2 miles the race covers will include a variety of road closures. Specific locations can be see at www.kcmarathon.org.
The expo goes from 3-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m to 8p.m. Friday. The race starts Saturday at 7 a.m.
