Kansas City Power & Light warns customers about new phone scam

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Power & Light is warning customers to be aware of a new phone scam that involves utility bills.

Michelle May, owner of Envy Salon, said she received a phone call Friday from someone claiming to be from KC P&L.

The scammer said May owed $1700, and he would shut off the power if she didn’t pay up.

“So I asked him how I needed to take care of it, and he wanted me to go to CVS and get a green money pay pack,” May said.

May didn’t owe any money to the company.

KC P&L said May is the second person to report this happening Friday.

If you feel you have been a victim of this scam, you can call KC P&L’s customer contact center at 816-471-5275.
