Kansas City's Halls department store moving from Plaza to Crown Center

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Halls department store, which has operated at its Plaza location since 1965, will move next year as part of a $10 million investment into Crown Center.

The store will remain open on the Plaza, 211 Nichols Rd., through late summer 2014, when it moves into the new 60,000 square-foot store on the third floor of Crown Center.

"It is exhilarating to be a part of the on-going revitalization of Crown Center," Halls president Kelly Cole said in a statement announcing the move.  "As the store evolves into the new Halls, we will transcend the traditional retail landscape, creating instead a vibrant, one-of-a-kind shopping destination."

Halls, which along with Crown Center is owned by Hallmark Cards, Inc., has joined forces with award-winning retail design firm Charles Sparks + Company to conceptualize a plan for the new store, which will encompass the center's entire third floor.

"As Crown Center celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013, we're thrilled to welcome the new Halls experience to the Crown Center Shops," Crown Center president Bill Lucas said.

Among the brightest features of the new store will be "The Bridge," a revitalization of the enclosed walkway bridging Grand Boulevard.

The Bridge will be opened up with windows, allowing customers to view Crown Center Square and the downtown skyline from the store.

"The Bridge will have its own vibe within the larger store," Halls officials promised, "highlighted by an urban/industrial feel with a dedicated sound system."
