How about a quick trip to Washington DC without leaving town? How about a trip back in time…at the same time?

Saturday, September 24, is the opening of the newest Smithsonian Museum: The National Museum of African American History and Culture.

From the unique architecture recalling the crown of an African princess to the 400,000 square feet of history inside, this is truly a place for all people.

That’s what the executive director of the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner, hopes the space will be for years to come.

The local museum will be part of the big opening Saturday with a watch party in The Blue Room.

Doors will open and brunch will be served at 8:30 a.m., with the live-stream of the ceremony starting at 9:00 a.m. President Barack Obama will speak and The Roots will play.

In addition to the party, visitors to the Jazz Museum can take a look at a small poster exhibit giving just a taste of what is inside the DC site.

It is a great combination: being part of national history from our own town’s historic 18th and Vine District.
