Some KCK students won't have a place to play at recess this week.

Police are still searching for who set the playground at Stony Point North Elementary School on fire Sunday afternoon.

It happened while kids were playing there.

"That is my favorite playground and I never knew why somebody would do that," student Lili Willard said.

According to district spokesperson David Smith, the part that burned was not the newest structure, but kids lost their slides and climbing structure.  It's now melted plastic and burned rubber.

It's a big deal for kids and parents, because they spent so much time fundraising for new additions.

"That playground took three years to build and they just burnt it down," student Eli Willard said.

Parents want accountability now. Witnesses at the playground said a group of older kids ran away from the scene around the time of the fire. Parents think that group could be connected, but police haven't confirmed anything.

"My daughter would really like them to come up and have to pay for it and have to rebuild it with us," parent Julie Leach said. "I'm not sure a lot of family members and parents would enjoy that, but we would really like some remorse from them."

"First I was upset, then I was mad. It's the kids. Tuesday they're going to come to school and they're not going to have a playground to play on, so that's my main focus right now is trying to get a replacement for it," said parent Rebecca Howard.

The fire caused more than $50,000 in damages.

Smith said the district will be accepting donations through the district’s Foundation for Excellence. 100 percent will go towards replacing the damage in the park.

The newest part of the playground was built with volunteer help this summer and Smith said they may need more volunteers once they come up with a plan to repair the playground.
