KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Police Department is investigating one of their own.
The officer under review ran over a man early Wednesday morning at 19th and Brighton while responding to a call.
Police said it was an accident.
They said the officer received a call of "a person down" around 4:30 a.m.
Police say the officer had slowly rounded the corner onto 19th - on a hill - with his spotlight and attention on the yards to the side when he felt a drag on the vehicle.
When he stepped out of the car the officer realized the man, who appeared drunk, was underneath the car.
The officer's two front wheels had straddled the man on the ground.
"It is always disconcerting and not advisable to lay down in the middle of the roadway and pass out or sleep or for whatever reason," Sgt DeEtta Jacobs said.
"I know at the scene, he was very, very concerned," Jacobs said.
The man went to the hospital with critical burns and scrapes to his body.
KCPD said the officer will remain on the job during the investigation.
