Local businesses compete in Literacy KC spelling bee

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Hope is a four letter word - and hope is what contestants provided Thursday night at Literacy Kansas City's 18th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee.

Teams representing about a dozen area companies competed spelling words many have never even heard before.  The event supports Literacy Kansas City's work in matching tutors with adult students to teach them how to read.

There's currently a waiting list for students so the agency is always looking to train new tutors to help make a difference.

"There are over 225,000 adults in the Kansas City area who cannot read at an adult level," said Board President Dr. Marilou Joyner.  "This impacts both economic issues.  It impacts family issues."

Our Mark Clegg is a member of Literacy KC's advisory board and served as the event's emcee.
