KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One local church is getting ready to help feed thousands of people struggling with food insecurity.

How they’re doing it? Well, they’re using funnels.

“This is a feed the funnel party,” Shannon Horn with North Heartland Community Church said.

On Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers will be packing 30,000 meals using funnels for families across the metro dealing with food insecurity.

The church is teaming up with Something To Eat, a local organization in Kansas City, Kansas that coordinates the event.

According to the organization, one in five children struggles with food insecurity here in Kansas City.

“A lot of people think that food insecurity means that they have no food, and that's not the case. They have access to foods but not the healthiest choices,” Something To Eat Director, David Lissauer said.

Lissauer said a healthy meal can make a difference in the classroom.

“When I taught, I could always tell the kids who had breakfast or kids who are struggling with hunger, they were struggling with attention, they often had behavior issues,” he said. “But when I did provide them with a snack, they'd be a totally different person.”

The bags will be packed with nutrients and vitamins and soon be handed out to families, schools and local food pantries.

“This stuff is good, it's healthy, it's the nutrients that people need,” Horn said. “I'm glad that we can do it. It's the little thing we can do to make a difference in Kansas City.”
