The goal is to do more than just make a splash, as many concerned mothers like Holly Switzer know. She brought her 3-year-old daughter Mila to Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

“Our whole family, they all have to go get swim lessons. It’s kind of a requirement in our family," Switzer said.

Mila was among the more than 40,000 children worldwide taking part in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson.

The event is in its 8th year and is hosted by the World Waterpark Association. Organizers like Beth Root say the goal is to try to prevent tragedy from happening as we enter the summer pool season.

“A lot of people don’t realize that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for kids ages 1 – 4 and the second leading cause of accidental death for kids under 14," Root said.

Organizers also say boys are 80 percent more likely to drown than girls. And kids are more likely to know how to swim if their parents can swim.
