LIBERTY, Mo. - A local teen battling a rare disease is using her experience to help other children.
Taylor Wilhelm started #taylorsarmy to collect toys and cards for kids at Children's Mercy Hospital. She decided to start the charity after spending last 18 months in and out of the hospital.
Taylor had a rare tumor on her pancreas that required a complex surgery to remove. She has spent more than 130 nights at the hospital, including her 15th birthday. After her diagnosis, friends at Liberty High School started #prayfortay. Taylor says that support, plus the support of complete strangers, inspired her to start collecting toys.
"Obviously being in here is not fun and that would make it more fun, and I feel like they would feel real special that someone went out of their way to help a stranger and stuff like that,” said Wilhelm.
Taylor also plans to create a website showing pictures of the kids with the toys that are donated. Anybody interested in donating can send toys and cards to: Taylor Wilhelm, P.O. Box 664, Liberty, MO 64069.
