Mayor Sly James is calling his recent brush with an angry protestor a close call

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James is calling his recent brush with an angry protestor a close call.

During the Mayor's State of the City address on Tuesday at the Gem Theater, a man got on stage and started yelling obscenities and pounding on the podium.

41Action News has learned that the protestor's name is Derron Black. Police will likely release his name Wednesday when state criminal charges of assaulting a police officer are expected to be filed.

Some people in the crowd were relieved that the protestor did not have a weapon and did not touch the Mayor.

"I didn't have time to be fearful to be honest with you," said Mayor James. "I saw a blur outs of the corner of my eye, and then it was around me in the back and up on the podium pounding on the podium."

Two Kansas City police officers tackled the man to the floor and got him off the stage.

"I am not going to question my security because there's nothing they could have done except to be standing with me side-by-side and we're not going to do that," James said.

Even though the protester was within striking distance, Mayor James said that he does not think security procedures need to change.

Police Chief Darryl Forte said there is always a security review after any incident to determine if changes need to be made.
