The Zocalo Mexican Restaurant has been closed for a week after health officials discovered roaches in the business.

A sign on the doors says, ‘Closed for the weekend.’

The Kansas City Health Department said they discovered roaches in the restaurant last week.

The restaurant tried to open four additional times but couldn't pass because roaches were still visible.

Health officials said they take these matters very seriously.

“Roaches come out to feed at night. So, if you see them in the day, they are hungry and it's a lot of them,” said Kansas City Senior Public Health Manager Naser Jouhari. “It's not very common. We only see this every once in a while.”

We talked with customers who say it's unfortunate but they'll continue coming to the restaurant.

“Hopefully they are not being incorporated to the entree and appetizer, but it makes sense that a roach could be discovered. I would come back to eat here if they’re open,” said Alex Fox.

“I think the food is really good. I understand that it happens and I know the pressure is on to get it taken care of,” said Tricia O'Sullivan.
