KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The old saying “There’s no crying in baseball” was debunked at Tuesday night’s Royals game.
It was an emotional first pitch that left few eyes dry in the stands after an 11-year-old threw the ball. Austin started toward the catcher to retrieve it when he realized it wasn’t one of the Royals behind the mask, it was his father back from serving overseas.
“People say you block out the crowd, I had never blocked out the crowd until last night when it all happened because it was just so incredible and I was just so focused on him and holding him was awesome,” Austin’s father Major Robert Sides said.
Major Sides had been stationed at a Kuwait air base. The two hadn’t seen each other in person in a year.
