KANSAS CITY - Residents around the community are coming together to help families displaced and affected by the fire that ripped through an Overland Park apartment complex Friday .
Dawanda Dawn lived in the apartment below where the fire that affected 12 units began. She's and her family are now having to stay with her mother while they recover. The Red Cross has been assisting the families, but an outpouring of support has come from metro-area residents.
"This has been hard," Dawn said. "You don't wake up thinking that you won't come home. My community has been real helpful."
A friend of Dawn's, Kristy Bennett, has established an online fundraiser to help the family recover.
