OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Hundreds of families gathered in Overland Park to celebrate their little miracles. They all had children who had to fight for their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
Sunday marked the 22nd year the families had gotten together to reunite with their doctors, nurses and all the other families with whom they had created such close bonds.
Little Briella King was born at 23 weeks. That, most doctors say, is too early to survive. She spent four months in the NICU and now she is almost a year old.
"We were so scared for so long that your baby isn't going to grow up or that maybe she's going to grow up to lead a typical life," Briella's mom Stacy said. "And you see all of these success stories everywhere. I mean there's just kids running around that Overland Park has saved. It just gives you a lot of hope."
