OLATHE, Kan. -- A nationwide engineering firm based in Olathe celebrated the “topping out” of its new corporate headquarters.

Terracon broke ground on the new building earlier this summer. It’s located near Ridgeview Road and College Boulevard. That's less than one mile from the building where the firm has rented space for its national base since 2007.

At Tuesday’s ceremony, the 200 employees working out of the headquarters signed their names on the last structural beam. Then construction crews placed it in the frame of the building. The $21 million project should be complete by March 2018.

Terracon President Swaminathan “Vasan” Srinivasan said Olathe has treated his company great and he felt like it was the perfect fit for a permanent headquarters building.

“Our employees very much like living and working in this area. So we just felt like we’ll remain committed to the community that has meant so much to us too,” Srinivasan explained.

The engineering consulting firm received grants and tax breaks from state and local governments to incentivize the company to stay in Olathe. In return, Terracon committed to creating jobs in the city.

Srinivasan said his company has grown by at least 10 percent over the past several years, so he does not anticipate any problems adding more jobs. The building is designed to allow for future growth.

Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland called the ceremony “a great day for Olathe.”

He highlighted the company’s success and the work Terracon has done providing talented workers in the area an opportunity to find employment.
