High-end stores in south Overland Park are dealing with a snatch and run thief. Police say the crimes were well thought out, and within seconds the suspect got out the doors of Von Maur with more than a thousand dollars in merchandise.

"These things happen so quickly, not minutes, they're seconds," explained detective Byron Pierce, Overland Park Police.

He said the main thing that drew the thief was the luxury items. He got away with Michael Kors purses and men's coats, but was also caught on surveillance.

Officers describe the man as African American, around 25 years old, 5’ 11” to 6’ 1” in height, with long braids. He was driving a dark gray Toyota or Nissan.

Police said he stole from both Von Maur and Stein Mart on November 14. He also tried to steal from another store in Oak Park Mall, but was unsuccessful.

Officers say stores can put expensive merchandise farther away from the doors, but admit there's no silver bullet to stop a grab and run thief.

The hot merchandise is expected to be sold.

"They are pushed in the black market is what we call it. It could be social media, it could be direct sale. Any of these people, perpetrators, they have clients... loyal clients who may buy these items from them," said Pierce.

He also said stolen items could show up on Craigslist, but are usually priced about 50 cents on the dollar. If something in your gut tells you the deal is too good to be true, it might be.

If you know who the man in the photo is you're asked to call police at 913-344-8729 or the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. Detectives say identifying the man is the next step in the investigation.
