An Overland Park man was charged earlier this month for trying to steal thousands of dollars' worth of hospital supplies from an area hospital.

Court documents allege that Dustin Knight, 31, was a patient at Shawnee Mission Medical Center on May 8 receiving treatment for falling down concrete stairs.

A security agent at the hospital spotted Knight with several items stashed in his pants, shoes and underwear, including Xanax and Adderall pills, numerous syringes, a scalpel, a sponge and other medical supplies.

In an interview with police, Knight told detectives that he saw drawers on crash carts open and took supplies from it. When asked why he took the supplies, he told police he did not know why.

It isn’t the first time Knight has been arrested for theft. Police noted that he was convicted of felony theft three times in the past, and two cases of misdemeanor theft in 2011 and 2015.

Knight, who is free on bond, will next appear in Court on June 29.
