Parents want to open new kind of KCMO school

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A group of parents hopes a community garden will help attract new students to a new Kansas City elementary school.

The Friends of Hale Cook Elementary want to turn the empty building at 73rd and Pennsylvania into a neighborhood school for parents in Waldo and Brookside.
The group hopes by sprucing up the grounds it will attract curiosity from people who pass by the site.
On Saturday, they said they need more than 100 parents of elementary school aged kids to sign up before August of 2013 in order to open a new kind of Kansas City public school.

"We believe Kansas City needs public schools and we want to see that happen," President of Friends of Hale Cook Ashley Hand said. "What we're trying to do is bring public schools back to the district and replicate that in other areas of the city."

Friends of Hale Cook will start a door to door campaign in the next few months and begin to ask businesses if they are interested in renovating classrooms.
