A 16-year-old male pedestrian was hit by a car outside Olathe Northwest High School Wednesday morning.

The boy is a student at the school and is in fair condition, according to Olathe Police Department Sgt. Logan Bonney.

“He was initially in serious condition he was talking on his way to the hospital,” said Stg. Bonney. “That’s a great sign that he was talking but pretty serious injuries as well.”

The driver of the car was a female student.

The family of Owen Thompson, who was the pedestrian who was hit, released the following statement:

"Thank you for your thoughts and support. Owen is in fair condition and recovering. Thank you to the first responders and the team at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for your quick action and care. Please respect our privacy at this time as Owen continues to heal.

Brad and Cindy Thompson"

Sgt. Bonney said rain may have been a factor in the incident, but it is still under investigation.

Lone Elm was closed while police investigate.
