Local police officers are reminding neighbors to not drink and drive this Labor Day weekend.

Kansas City police told 41 Action News they will be conducting planned checkpoints during the coming months.

Officers said they carefully pick out where to set up. They look at where DUIs, driving deaths and other crime incidents happen and put it into a database.

“Deadly statistics can be avoided by simply not getting behind the wheel when you are drinking,” said Chris Bentch, Kansas City Police DUI Section Supervisor.

Police said on average, they have 200 to 300 arrests during checkpoints.

Drunk driving related deaths are down in 2016 on the Kansas side but are increasing in Missouri.
