KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An officer on his way to work Thursday morning managed to hop in and track down an assault and kidnapping suspect, reuniting the child with his mother in south Kansas City.

Around 4:20 Thursday morning, the officer heard the disturbance call and headed toward 81st and Campbell on reports that a man had just assaulted a woman and taken her 1-year-old child with him when he fled the scene.

Officers safely located the child and took the man into custody. The suspect's identity was not immediately released.

Medical responders treated the woman and her toddler, but they were okay.

Police believe the child was originally taken from his mother near 56th and Highland.

It was not initially clear how the man and woman knew one another.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
