Possible crime connection between two Craigslist sales gone wrong

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - BREAKING NEWS UPDATE - July, 18, at 6:45 a.m.

Authorities say four people have been arrested in connection with the thefts. Police believe they are connected, and the group could be responsible for other robberies. We'll have more on these developments as details become available.

What started as a car for sale on Craigslist turned into a crime scene.

Now, police are looking into whether it’s linked to another nearby crime.

The police report stated two parents wanted to get their 16-year-old son a car. They contacted “AJ” and took a test drive.

Then, two different people approached the family with guns in hand and demanded cash. They fired five shots at the couple at an apartment complex at the 5500 block of East 84th Terrace and took off.

The report also revealed the phone number of the seller on Craigslist, AJ. A quick search online using that number brought up several items still available on Craigslist including a car, an Xbox, and cell phones.

Less than two miles away from the shooting, a second Craigslist encounter happened a few hours earlier.

The victim planned to sell an Xbox, but gave it up when two men threatened him with guns.

Detectives haven’t determined if the two Craigslist incidents are connected, but police said crimes like these are happening more often.

“It is something that is starting to happen quite often from the smallest item to the biggest item I would use caution,” Sgt. Kari Thompson of the Kansas City Police Department said.

Police recommend meeting a seller in a public place, even a police station. Also, don't use cash. Use a money order instead.

Kansas City Crimes Stoppers is now offering a $7,000 reward for information into the shooting.
