Valentine’s Day is known for flowers and sweets, but some in the metro received a furry treat!

On Feb. 12, the Great Plains SPCA delivered puppy love throughout the Kansas City metro. For $50, the first 40 people to apply sent their valentines a Puppy Gram to their place of employment. For 15 to 20 minutes, work turned into puppy playtime.

Jordan Gray works at VML. His girlfriend Shannon ordered a Puppy Gram, sending him a surprise visit from Mr. Wilson (an Australian shepherd/pug mix) and Abu (a Chihuahua/dachshund mix) to his job.

“This is the most amazing gift possible,” said Gray. “I had no idea this was happening.”

He and his coworkers agree that a Puppy Gram trumps all Valentine’s Day gifts.

“This is far superior to roses or anything like that,” he said.

When asked if puppies beat roses and chocolate, Christina Miller said, “100 percent. And I really like cats, so that’s saying something.”

All of the proceeds from the Puppy Grams go to support the pets served by the Great Plains SPCA.

“It helps us as a fundraiser. More importantly, it’s an awareness raiser. At Great Plains SPCA, we have hundreds of pets looking for homes and this is a way for them to get out into the Kansas City area instead of staying in the shelter,” said Rachel Hodgson, the chief commendations officer.

The 16 puppies being used as Puppy Grams are all expected to get adopted.
