Residents in KC neighborhood saddened by shooting of 2-year-old boy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Residents in a Kansas City neighborhood were not surprised by the sound of gunfire on Friday, but they were angered to learn that the victim was a 2-year old boy.

Victor Patrico stopped by a home in the 1600 block of Topping Avenue on Friday afternoon to check on his stepson. He saw a boarded up window and no one answered the door.  A neighbor told him that a child had been shot inside the home. Patrico immediately feared that it was his 3-year-old stepson.

Patrico soon learned from neighbors that his stepson was safe, but he was far from relieved.

"Even though it's not my son, there's concern for the kids. Anybody can be exposed to this, even adults," Patrico said.

The young boy who was injured was shot in the back while watching a movie in the home. He was conscious and alert when taken to an area hospital, officials said.

According the Kansas City Police Department's Crime Reports website, a robbery, a theft and a homicide have taken place in the surrounding area in the last month.

The KCPD gang unit is investigating the incident to determine whether he was the victim of a drive-by shooting.
"Due to the angle where the shots came from, they're still investigating if it was an actual drive-by or a person out on foot," Sgt. Marisa Barnes, KCPD spokesperson, explained.
