Up, up and away!

That’s the motto this weekend at Kansas City’s Rhythm 'N Balloons festival, taking off at Hodge Park, north of the river.

Thursday morning, during a little dry slot in the weather, pilot Joel Sturdevant gave us a lift to start the day in the RE/MAX balloon.

Joel, and his co-pilot Liaka, named for the first dog in space, fill the balloon with cool air and then, once upright, heat things up. (Meaning the reporter wasn’t the only thing filled with hot air this morning.)

This weekend at Hodge Park, there will be dozens of balloons flying and glowing as well as 14 different bands including national acts such as Eddie Money, Jo Dee Messina, Los Lobos and Travis Tritt.

But, there is a way for you to participate without being at the festival, and help a local charity at the same time.

One of the balloons going up in the air is the Wonder Bread Balloon.

For every photo of the Wonder Balloon uploaded on social media during the Festival, with the hashtag #SpotTheWonder and a hashtag tied to one of the charities (#WarriorsAscent, #TurnThePageKC, #ASFNextStep or #JDRFkc), Wonder will donate $5 per photo to the charity with the most uploads using its hashtag for a minimum donation of $1,000.

So, enjoy the music and beautiful balloons at the festival or just keep looking up, find the Wonder and help others in our town.
