The city of Kansas City is working diligently on its Sewer Rehabilitation Program that will repair the most critical parts of the city's aging sewer lines.

Trenchless Technology is being used in metro neighborhoods to re-line and repair the sewers. There's no digging involved but there is downtime.

Homeowners are being alerted to the upcoming work a few days ahead of time.

Sherman Vaughn works in the field for Insituform, one of three companies contracted to do the sewer repair work. He advises homeowners to follow the rules outlined on the door hanger.

"Since a new liner is hardening, no services are open. If you flush constantly or you're using your washing machine or shower, it will back up and maybe flood your basement," said Vaughn.

Homeowners near 64th and South Benton received the door hangers informing them of the upcoming repairs, encouraging them not to take a shower or flush the toilets between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, which could easily be the hottest day of the year.

Anna Gravely and her granddaughter Tianna followed the rules and chose to leave home.

"We didn't want to be tempted to use the water, so we thought we'd stay away from home as long as we can," said Gravely.

This year, the city is investing $7 million to extend the life of existing sewer lines. Once the work is complete, the lines will be in tip top shape for the next 50 to 75 years.
