A controversy surrounding two landmarks in Kansas City has been the talk of the town recently. One many drive past every day and, another — a popular place to visit on the Country Club Plaza.

"I think it's beautiful," said Norma Seidel as she sat at the JC Nichols Fountain on the Plaza.

Each monument has its own story and different views of their place in the city. A memorial for the United Daughters of the Confederacy sits at 55th and Ward Parkway.

Some on Twitter say the memorial has to go.

Travis Wears says there should be a conversation about if the memorial should be removed.

“If there are people out there that feel hurt and think these memorials are abusive or wrong, I think their voices should be heard,” said Travis Wears.

Norma Seidel just moved from California. She says the past should not be the focus.

“That was the past, this is today. We can make whatever we want,” said Seidel.

There is also controversy surrounding the iconic fountain named after JC Nichols who created the Plaza. He also has a controversial history involving race and housing.

“Sometimes it's difficult to shed those perceptions of minorities,” said Loraine Orasco.

Loraine Orasco thinks having memorials named after those with controversial pasts is not a way to move forward.

“I do think they should re-name it. I do think the past does move into today and how some people feel,” said Orasco.
