KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Spirit Airlines will soon bring its low-cost fares to fliers out of Kansas City International Airport.
Service will begin on August 7 to five cities, the company announced at a Tuesday morning news conference. Fares begin at $30 on the company’s website. The cities are Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW), Chicago (ORD), Detroit (DTW) and Las Vegas (LAS).
The low-cost airline has gained popularity for its inexpensive flights. However, while it boasts its fares, the airline crams more seats into planes which don’t recline. The airline also charges fees for many items other companies subsidize, such as: fees for carry-on bags, soft drinks and assigned seats.
A recent Planet Money episode focused on Spirit’s fast-growing business despite its high customer complaint rate , suggesting price plays a much larger role in people’s decision-making process and what consumers are willing to deal with to save a buck.
