Streetcar measure now open to some voters

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - If voters approve, a special taxing district will come together to support a downtown streetcar system in Kansas City, Mo.

Monday was the first day that registered voters living in the district could request a ballot on the issue.

You can pick up the request forms at the Jackson County Courthouse or online at .

The ballots will also be mailed to qualified voters in June. They must be returned by July 31 to count.

The proposed two-mile streetcar line would connect the River Market to Crown Center.

If the tax district is approved, a second election will be held to determine the exact funding and the proposed taxes.

Right now, the city plan calls for higher sales and property taxes only in the district along the route, not city-wide.
