KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For many women staying at Kansas City's Sheffield Place, filing a tax return is a new experience.
That's why tax preparers from SmartSpot held a tax clinic at the shelter Monday night.
The group helped women file their taxes free of charge -- a service that helped some of these women save hundreds of dollars.
"A lot of these moms are going qualify for some really great tax benefits and end up with refunds that will help them in their transition from homelessness to being full-time, working, students, whatever it is they're doing to progress with their lives," said Kathy Burlison from SmartSpot.
Sheffield Place has helped homeless families get back on their feet since 1991.
