Area high schoolers look to collect 10,000 donated food items in 12-hour period

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Standing outside the doors to Hy-Vee, volunteers from several area high schools asked shoppers for donations. They're part of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Council.

Their goal? Gather 10,000 food donations in 12 hours. They started at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. By noon, their truck was almost half-full of donations to the Community Service League. They say if they reach their goal of 10,000, they will be able to feed the community for three days.

"Watching the truck fill up, it's amazing!" said Katie Owens, from Van Horn High School.

You can drop by the Hy-Vee at 40 Highway and Noland Road in Independence until 8:00 p.m. if you'd like to donate.
