The family of 2-year-old Peyton Barnett is in mourning after she was fatally hit by a car in Olathe Saturday afternoon.

Angela Barnett, Peyton's grandmother, says she was on her way to pick the little girl up.

"My husband and I were just two minutes away from her and were talking to her on the phone and she was singing her song like 'Hurry up papa, hurry up papa,' and we just didn’t make it in time," said Barnett.

Before Angela and her husband could pick Peyton up, she was hit by a car.

"Her mother screamed and hollered and we were on the phone together at that time," said Barnett.

Barnett says when they finally arrived, paramedics told her Peyton was dead.

On Sunday, people living in the Olathe neighborhood put up a memorial filled with flowers, candles and teddy bears for the little girl where she died.

Police say a 26-year-old man hit Peyton on Blackfoot Drive near 151st Street just before 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Barnett family is calling the death of Peyton a horrible accident, which took away a toddler full of energy and spunk.

"We have a playroom downstairs and I don’t care who would come to the house, Peyton would grab their hand and say 'let's go play,'" said Barnett.

Barnett has this message for families.

"Love your children to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow may bring," said Barnett.

Editor's Note: Police previously said Peyton Barnett was three years old. It is now being reported that she is two years old.
