Top 2 spellers in Jackson County spelling bee tied

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - They’re going to need more words.

In a spelling bee competition Saturday at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, Highland Park fifth grader Sophia Hoffman and Frontier School of Innovation seventh-grader Kush Sharma squared off for top honors.

The pair matched each other word for word, round after round. At the end of 66 rounds Saturday, officials declared a tie and set another match for next month to decide a winner.

Either Sophia or Kush will represent Jackson County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
