In 1974, President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week as a way to recognize those who use their time to help and encourage others to do the same. This year, the week falls on April 10 to 16. There are plenty of places who need willing participants to help.

Great Plains SPCA is always looking for volunteers.

“There’s so many ways to volunteer with Great Plains SPCA. You can get hands-on with the dogs and cats or you can volunteer from home. So there’s something for everyone,” said Rachel Hodgson, chief communications officer.

Ways to Help:

  • Walk dogs.
  • Socialize with cats.
  • Foster shelter animals.
  • Help pet food pantry.

Kim Goings first started volunteering after one of her cats passed away.

“She was my real lap cat that I got attention from. My other cat was kind of a loner, and so I came here to get some more cat attention,” Goings said. “It’s fun, it’s rewarding, you meet a lot of people, it’s not just the animals. You get to meet a lot of different people. It’s good.”

Help is always needed, but there is a great demand in the spring.

“We have a huge need every single day for more people to come, but especially right now in the spring time when we have more pets coming to us for help. We have puppy and kitten season starting, so we need more people to be hands-on,” Hodgson said.

To sign up to volunteer, visit Great Plains SPCA's website.

“It is critical to have volunteer help to keep them happy, healthy and socialized while with us so that they can get a home,” Hodgson said.
