Volunteers cleaned Independence Schools for "Project Shine"

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - From moving mulch to painting curbs, more than 1,200 people volunteered their time to spruce up schools in the Independence School District Saturday.

Five schools in the district got a facelift, including Nowlin Middle School where cleaning up the center courtyard was a point of great pride for volunteers.

Dale Herl is the district's superintendent. He participated in the "Project Shine."

"They come out because they feel very strongly about education in the Independence School District, and they just really want to help," Herl said.

This year volunteers painted walls and curbs at Nowlin Middle School, Bridger Middle School, Korte Elementary School, Mill Creek Elementary School and Three Trails Elementary School.

Next year the teams will work on other schools in the district.
