GRANDVIEW, Mo. - After a night of rain and floods, there is a ray of hope for homeowners in Grandview.
Volunteers from the Missouri Baptists Convention pulled their disaster relief trailer to one of the neighborhoods hit hardest by Tuesday morning's floods.
One homeowner said there were two feet of standing water inside his home after the rain stopped. Luckily, he was not home at the time.
Volunteers sprang into action to help repair homes by ripping out drywall, placing trash in a dumpster, and applying a material to prevent mold.
Chris Montgomery was in the process of tearing his first floor down to the studs when the volunteers arrived. He called them a "Godsend," adding they helped him complete his work a lot faster than expected.
"It's awesome. I've been thanking them every five seconds I see them in there because they're really helping out a lot," said Montgomery.
Mostly retirees with handy work experience from the Baptist church make up the disaster response team. They travel the country to help where they’re needed.
"We give them the encouragement that things are going to get better. It lifts their spirits," explained organizer Douglas Hager.
The Missouri Baptists Convention provides the disaster relief free of cost for flooding victims. Homeowners will need to find a contractor to rebuild.
Grandview’s public works director says they are assessing some of the harder hit spots in the city.
“The city engineer is going around to all these spots right now and reviewing them herself in the field,” said Dennis Randolph, Public Works Director for the city.
