Walkers move to 'Outpace Poverty' at Liberty Memorial

Kansas City, MO - Hundreds of people gathered at Liberty Memorial Saturday morning to "Outpace Poverty." The 5K walk was held by Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph to help Missourians.

The walk began shortly after 8 a.m. with supporters united to raise awareness and fight poverty.

Poverty has many faces in Kansas City and Northwest Missouri: a working, single mother and her young children, grandparents scraping by on a meager monthly social security check or one of an estimated 1,800 veterans sleeping on the streets each night.

Organizers wanted to highlight the fact that poverty affects our neighbors, friends and the entire community.

The goal of Outpace Poverty is to raise $200,000 to provide care and advocacy to nearly 150,000 people in need.

This year's honorary spokesman was retired Kansas City Chiefs Center Tim Grunhard.

More than 700 people registered for this year's event.
