On this day in history: Nixon utters famous words "I'm not a crook"

(NBC) - Forty years ago on November 17, former President Richard Nixon uttered one of his most famous quotes.

In 1973, Nixon spot to a group of reporters in Orlando, Fla. During that interview, he defended his record in the Watergate case and said he never profited from his service to the country.

He said, "People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook."

Just a year later, on August 9, 1974, Nixon resigned.
