The Kansas City Zoo celebrates the birthday of Nikita the polar bear with a party and cake

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - No birthday party is complete without cake. So, you better believe staff at the Kansas City Zoo made sure to get one for their prized polar bear, Nikita.

However, the cake differs from those that humans consume. Nikita’s cake was made of lard and frosted with an icing of berries. Instead of candles, Nikita’s cake was topped off with frozen fish-cicles.

Typically, the 750 pound bear will eat 16 pounds of fish, five pounds of dog food and one and a half pounds of lard each day.

His birthday is November 21st so, according to Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff, they wanted to make it one to remember.

Nikita came to Kansas City in August from his home in Toledo. So, Sunday’s special celebration is his first in the City of Fountains.

Activities Saturday include cupcakes for kids and a chance to make Nikita a birthday card. Also, children are invited to hear special lessons about polar bears at 11 a.m., 1 p.m and 3 p.m.

Then, on Saturday night, Nikita will be joined overnight by a group excited to ring in Nikita’s next year of life with a Polar Bear Pajama Party.

The zoo is open to the public daily until 4 p.m.
